Greetings from the summertime, where the livin' is easy, and the relaxation is plentiful!

This is the AP Biology class blog, where during the school year, we'll blog about various issues in science that relate to topics we are studying in class. I want to know what you think about certain issues, and how you would solve the world's problems using science.

Until school begins, we'll be using this forum as an online discussion forum for the assigned reading--Natalie Angier's The Canon. Each week until about the 3rd week of school, I'll post a different blog entry about a couple of the chapters in the book which will usually contain a couple of questions for discussion. You are required to respond to either the questions posed, or to comments that others make in the discussion thread. During the school year, the same things will apply: each week, I will post a story or two about current happenings in science dealing with topics that we're studying with 'questions for thought' and I will ask that you share your opinions or questions about the topic here in this forum. During the school year, you are required to post a minimum of 10 substantive comments each six weeks, as it will count as a lab grade.

Before posting, remember to read the "Forum Decorum" which is located on the front page, near the upper right hand corner. These are the rules that I ask you to abide by so that this forum remains an academic forum rather than a forum filled with drama and inappropriateness. Failure to abide by these established rules will result in your inability to blog in this forum.

That being said, I'll put up this week's Canon post next, but I thought I'd conclude this post by giving you my answers to the About Me sheet, as promised:

Name: Mrs. Ferguson

Class (choose one): Plano East, 1991 (yes, before most of you were born!)

The most interesting thing I’ve done this summer was: I was interviewed by the New York Times for an article about evolution education in schools. I also went to Mount Rainier in Washington State.

When I finish high school, I plan on: Well, being as I've finished high school, and now two college degrees...I'm planning on starting another one in the spring. I'm applying to a graduate program in science education that is a distance learning program based out of Perth, Australia (Heath Ledger's hometown).

When I think of Biology, I think about: Just how much it has changed in the last 20 years. You have no idea!

If you could be a famous person, living or dead, who would you be and why? Hmmm...I think I would probably want to be Rosalind Franklin, because she was one of the most significant female scientists of the 20th century, but she doesn't get enough credit for her work on the discovery of the structure of DNA. I would make sure that she did.

Favorite ice cream flavor? Why? Ben and Jerry's New York Super Fudge Chunk, because it's chocolate ice cream, white chocolate chunks, dark chocolate chunks and chocolate covered pecans--all my favorite dessert type things!

You are building a time capsule to be opened 100 years from now. What three things would you choose to put in it that will tell people in the future about you and why? Choose only three things.

I think I would put my college degrees in it to show that I loved to learn; I would put a disk in it with all the photos I've ever taken in my life on it, so people could see that I loved my family and that I loved to travel; and I think I would put my iPod in it, to show people that I had fairly eclectic taste in music.
If you could choose an actor to star in the movie about your life, who would you choose? America Ferrera or Sara Ramirez. But they'd have to make them gain weight to play me.

Who is the person you look up to most, and why? There are three people. My parents, because they instilled in me a sense of right and wrong, as well as a good work ethic and taught me that it was more important to be nice than it was to be rich; and my mother-in-law, because she is one of the strongest women I know--she has been through a lot in her 61 years, and I can only hope that I handle some of the same things she's had to deal with with the same poise and grace that she has.

Favorite animal? Bulldog. I really, really want one. I also like bears and most other animals. Bugs, not so much.

Word Association: Tell me the first thing that comes to mind when you see these words. Keep your answers brief (30 character limit)

Cell: life
Carbohydrate: tasty
Bacteria: simple
Evolution: essential
Water: necessary
Balance: hard to keep
Ecology: Earth
Climate: changing
Conserve: learning to
Life: coolest thing ever
