There is an interesting article in today's BBC Science and Nature section about the uproar regarding the production of biofuels and the effect it is having on the world's food supply. A BBC expert is calling for a 5-year moratorium on the use of biofuels so that people can find ways to produce the cleaner fuels from the waste products of food crops(i.e., corn, bananas) rather than the foods themselves (again, corn).
Think about the implications the use of food crops for fuel has on the global economy. What will happen to the Third World nations who rely on crops that the US exports as food when the food crops' availability declines? Do the benefits of potentially cleaner air outweigh a potential worldwide hunger crisis? What social and political implications does this have? Are there presently other fuel technologies that could avert any crisis that may occur and if so, how might they help?
